The college was founded in 1627 in Madrid by Colonel William Semple, a soldier of fortune, originally from Lochwinnoch. At the time, penal laws in Scotland were harsh and the education of men for the Catholic priesthood was banned in the country.The 140 years in Madrid were not particularly successful. The college was under the direction of Jesuits, relatively few students arrived from Scotland and even fewer returned as priests. Most either left or joined the Society of Jesus. But the college struggled on until 1767 when all Jesuits were expelled from Spain.At that time the college almost disappeared but fortunately the bishops in Scotland sent a priest, John Geddes, to Madrid. He recovered the college property, obtained a confiscated Jesuit college in Valladolid, transferred the Scots College there while still retaining the Madrid property. The remarkable story of his negotiations in Madrid and of his ten years at the head of the college in Valladolid are fully described in the book.The college prospered under various rectors in the following decades. There were always noteworthy events to be told, as well as two periods without students. The first was during the Napoleonic campaign in Spain and the second during the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War.The book was first published in 1971 to mark the second centenary of the transfer from Madrid to Valladolid.
